The following video shows how I make an engraving cutter (and the handle that holds it) to engrave spells on wooden furniture. This method uses inexpensive materials, but it requires a little effort on your part.
Let’s talk about each element of the tool.
The Cutters
I use the pear- and round-shaped Exacto blades, which show up on a lot of websites that cater to the flooring industry and crafts. Since I started writing about them, the supply has been temporarily depleted. If you don’t have the cutters yet, be patient. They’ll make more.
The pear-shaped cutters are a good shape for engraving fine lines. Also available here.
The small round cutters also make fine lines (1/16” to 3/32” wide). Also available here.
The large round cutters are the easiest to sharpen, but they make lines that are 1/8” or wider. Also available here.
The width of your line is a matter of taste. To my eye, the smaller lines seem common older pieces, whereas wider lines are more contemporary.
