With 60 spell panels now complete, I have found a rhythm with the engraving tools. And I have a few tips to pass on if you want to give it a try.
But most of all, I’ve come to accept a little tear-out with the process. After looking at original old work (such as above), I can see how the maker struggled the same way I am struggling. The good news: I get a little better with each spell panel. The bad news: I might not be able to eliminate tear-out entirely.
I also take heart knowing that the paint on the spell panels will tidy them up a bit.
Some tips:
1. With the straight-line cutter, work from right to left for most cuts, but especially the very common fishing net pattern.
